“Postcards” is based on the text from the final letter of Suzanne Burinovici, a Jewish Romanian citizen who was arrested in Paris and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau on the 27th of September, 1942. Along with her mother, she was immediately murdered on arrival. She was 38 years old. This letter was written on a singular postcard near a transit camp. It was addressed to her daughter, Claudine who was 14 at the time. It was found among thousands of other papers during the war, and it was delivered to her daughter, who, with her little brother, were the only members of the entire family to survive the war. The postcard is available to view at the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe), in Berlin, Germany.”
